Like many pandemic-borne initiatives, Panda Bear and Sonic Growth’s upcoming album Reset mined the previous within the face of a seemingly interminable current. Whereas some sought childhood comforts in banana bread recipes, these longtime collaborators—actual names Noah Lennox and Pete Kember, respectively—discovered theirs within the joyful familiarity of favourite data from the Fifties and ’60s. Their sunny new single, “Fringe of the Edge,” opens with a looped concord from Randy & the Rainbows’ 1963 doo-wop hit “Denise.” However its buoyant spirit begins to really feel uncanny when the sentimentalism of Lennox’s vocals is disrupted by the jarring buzz of a dial-up web modem. Its out of date trill mixes with glittering synths and doo-wop harmonies till this Seaside Boys-inspired reverie feels much less like a Pacific coast cruise than a nasty journey inside a SoCal Radio Shack. As the ultimate refrain concludes in echolalia (“to the sting/of the sting/of the sting”), the cacophony of client tech crescendos, buzzing and beeping into silence.
