Whether or not it’s sampling Britney, channeling Mazzy Star, or singing backing vocals for her husband and collaborator George Clanton, Neggy Gemmy—the Los Angeles-based producer and songwriter Lindsey French, previously often known as Adverse Gemini—imbues every part she does with glamorous, disaffected cool. Though the singles from her forthcoming third album have dipped into bossed-up hyperpop, anxious balladry, and now misty membership music, all of them spring from the identical tripped-out, alienated world.

On her newest single “Daydream,” French runs early-aughts deep home via her personal hazy filter. She fills the monitor with era-specific markers, dehydrating every aspect till it’s brittle: the catchy horn loop on the track’s shut is tinny and indifferent, whereas a violin half is oddly tense, as if each bow and string are made out of glass. French’s vocals, however, are as candy and humid because the air from a raspberry-flavored vape—a change of tempo from the anguished affectation of final 12 months’s “California.” “I’m feeling sooner, let me go for a journey/We’re like a taking pictures star within the sky tonight,” she sighs, and for three-and-a-half minutes her head stays within the clouds.
