Lucrecia Dalt: “Dicen”

Lucrecia Dalt: “Dicen”

Lucrecia Dalt likes to settle in shadowy craters and see what unusual new types of life emerge. The Colombian musician’s 2020 album No period sólida was narrated partially by a fictional character named Lia, who spoke in jumbled syllables and phrases as she reacted to the world round her. The album’s supernatural passages sounded trapped in haze, however they transported the listener to new realms of metaphysical understanding.

On her upcoming album, ¡Ay!, Dalt continues to discover conceptual narratives whereas pushing her sound design to new heights. ¡Ay! tells the story of an eccentric alien entity named Preta who has simply landed on Earth, and on the album’s newest providing, “Dicen,” Dalt acts as a distant third-person omniscient narrator, detailing the gossip surrounding Preta’s arrival. “They are saying … she walks in a borrowed pores and skin,” Dalt sings. The sound, paying homage to Tom Waits’ Rain Canine, is simply as mystifying: bolero drums are met with creaky brass synths as a trumpet pipes a lonely blues melody. As “Dicen” settles into this extraterrestrial tropical ambiance, Preta’s conduct solely turns into extra inscrutable. “Nobody can perceive her/She crawls round and licks all of it up,” Dalt says to no avail. “Dicen” is advanced, alluring, and hallucinatory, three dimensional in each story and sound.
