Based to bridge the gender hole in China’s male-dominated underground membership scene, the Shanghai-based celebration sequence Scandal launched its personal label final 12 months. Whereas its first compilation, Alexithymia, featured vigorous cuts of techno, acid, and jungle from eight native feminine producers, the label’s second compilation, Shanghai Goals, veers towards airier deconstructed membership music. Some of the compelling tracks comes from Huizit, a Chengdu-based producer and co-founder of the native queer celebration sequence Chilldo. On “Chilldo Biking Membership,” beads of pearly synths cascade throughout empty area, joined by oscillating pulses and dreamy washes of environment. However the curtains are immediately yanked down, and it’s as when you’re being engulfed in a darkish and messy crowd, subjected to a taut, punishing bassline, incessant claps, and sound results like shattered glass. Cue the idle chitchat of the dancefloor, a passing “welcome to Chengdu,” and hearty laughter as Huizit pulls you into the sweaty, rumbling heart of a queer celebration.
